Why Pray on MLK?

On August 8, 1968 in Chicago, South Park Way was renamed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. in order to honor his memory and the incredible impact of his Civil Rights work. Within a few decades, over 1,000 cities across the U.S. and the globe would follow suit. Ironically today, many of these same streets are the most direct point of access into communities deeply affected by the legacy of racism, generational poverty, and crime.

On August 8th, 2020, thousands came together across all 50 states to form a multi-ethnic human prayer chain on MLK streets in over 300 cities. We believe God wants to redeem these roads and cause them to become a national representation of His “highway of holiness,” a sign and a wonder of both economic and spiritual renewal.

In 1983, Dr.King’s birthday was declared a federal holiday. Since then, millions have paused annually to celebrate what he stood for, while longing for a similar expression of his rare leadership to re-emerge.

Jesus is the most prolific freedom fighter, revolutionary, and reformer in human history. Dr. King was simply an earthly vessel communicating heaven’s agenda for raising up a more righteous nation and a reconciled humanity. That job was never intended to be borne upon the shoulders of one individual, it was conferred upon the Body of Christ.

In 2022, the Church must move far beyond where we’ve been. We must break through that which has chained us to inequity, created walls of division, and expanded the borders of fear which keep us from moving in the love of God. It is critical that we reach together toward a mature expression of the ministry of reconciliation. Through Pray On MLK, we are creating a John 17 “bow” to help the church fire an “arrow” of divine love across the nation; in hopes of striking what has been wounded with the salve of divine healing.
